Research on Computational Topology

Date: 15 - 20 August 2027

Location: BIRS - Banff International Research Station

Event type: Workshop

Organisers: Barbara Giunti, Emily Fox, Francesca Tombari

Website: www.birs.ca/events/2027/5-day-workshops/27w5705

The Workshop on Research in Computational Topology is a research-focused meeting dedicated to recent advances in applied and computational topology. A central theme of the workshop is the challenge of understanding topological descriptors designed to capture the structure of complex data. Topics include multiparameter and generalized persistence, algorithms and computational aspects of topological descriptors, emerging connections with non-Euclidean geometry, and applications of knot theory. By bringing together researchers working from these different perspectives, the workshop aims to identify common themes, transfer techniques across disciplines, and advance the mathematical foundations for computational topology.

The workshop is designed as a collaborative research meeting, with six group leaders coordinating focused research projects. Hosted at the Banff International Research Station (BIRS), it will provide an intensive environment for discussion, problem sessions, and the development of new collaborations. Alongside introductory lectures presenting the research problems, participants will spend most of the week working in groups, exchanging ideas and developing new approaches to the challenges identified by the project leaders.
