Algebraic geometry is a central area of mathematical research with broad international significance. One of its guiding problems is the classification of algebraic varieties. The theory that addresses these questions is moduli theory, which studies how geometric objects vary in families and is fundamental to understanding the objects themselves. The theory dates back at least to Riemann in the mid-nineteenth century, when he introduced the term “moduli.” Moduli spaces were first rigorously constructed in the 1960s by Mumford, and have continued to develop ever since, most notably through the infusion of ideas from physics after 1980. In recent decades, the theory has undergone extraordinary growth, establishing deep connections with many areas of mathematics.

The Vector Bundles on Algebraic Curves (VBAC) Conferences have been held almost every year at institutions around the world since 1994 and have played a central role in shaping research directions in the field. Their purpose is to bring together leading experts to assess recent developments, identify emerging trends, and define priorities for future research. The 2027 conference will focus on “Interactions in the Geometry of Moduli Spaces”. It will cover topics such as Brill-Noether theory, birational geometry and wall-crossing, and other current interactions in the geometry of moduli spaces.
