Stability of algebraic varieties and Kähler geometry

Abstract: This article is a survey of some developments concerning the existence of constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics and Kähler-Einstein metrics on complex projective varieties. We explain the “moment map” point of view on these questions, and link with Geometric Invariant Theory and notions of “stability”. We outline existence results for Fano manifolds and for toric surfaces.
