Jack Thorne FRS

Date: 11 May 2020

Congratualtions to former Clay Research Fellow Jack Thorne (2012-2017) who has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society for his multiple breakthroughs in diverse areas of algebraic number theory, particularly its interaction with representation theory and the theory of automorphic forms.

The work cited in support of his election includes: his proof of new cases of functoriality for holomorphic modular forms; the modularity of elliptic curves over any layer of the cyclotomic tower; the existence of Galois representations associated to regular algebraic automorphic forms; and the potential automorphy of local systems on curves over finite fields.

Jack is currently a Professor of Pure Mathematics at the Univesity of Cambridge.

Babbage Archive

Oxford’s History of Science Museum holds important material associated with Charles Babbage, including components of Babbage’s first (unfinished) mechanical computing machine and an archive of his personal notes about his machines. With support from CMI, the Museum undertook a project to conserve and digitise this precious archive of Babbage material. Image courtesy of the History […]
