The Iwasawa conferences are an international conference series that has been taking place roughly biennially since 2004 and is the established regular conference that updates the research community on progress in Iwasawa theory. The focus of the 2023 meeting will be slightly wider to reflect the interests of John Coates.

Coates made fundamental contributions to our understanding of elliptic curves, L-functions and the Birch–Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, and was one of the founders of Iwasawa theory of elliptic curves and of non-commutative Iwasawa theory. He held the Sadleirian chair of mathematics at Cambridge until his retirement (1986–2012), was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1985, and served as the President of the London Mathematical Society in 1988–1990.
